Abstract
Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease with an increasing prevalence and is no longer limited to older adults, but has also been found among individuals of productive age, including university students. Unhealthy lifestyle behaviors, such as physical inactivity and poor dietary patterns, contribute to an increased risk. Early detection of risk factors is therefore essential for prevention. The Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC) is a widely used screening instrument to estimate the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Objective: This study aimed to describe the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus among nursing students at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang, class of 2023, based on the FINDRISC score.
Methods: A descriptive quantitative design was applied. A total of 119 respondents were selected from a population of 170 students using the Slovin formula and simple random sampling with a random name picker. Data were collected using the FINDRISC questionnaire and analyzed descriptively using frequency distributions and percentages.
Results: Most respondents were classified as having a low risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus, followed by fairly low and moderate risk categories. No respondents were identified in the high or very high-risk categories. The majority were under 45 years old, had normal body mass index and waist circumference, engaged in regular physical activity, and had no history of hyperglycemia or family history of diabetes.
Conclusion: Most students had a low risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, promotive and preventive efforts focusing on healthy lifestyle practices remain necessary to prevent future risk.
