Abstract

Globalization and modernization have brought significant changes to students’ values and behavioral patterns. One emerging phenomenon is living together, defined as cohabitation with a partner without a legally or religiously recognized marriage. This behavior is regarded as a form of behavioral deviance as it contradicts religious, cultural, and social norms prevailing in Indonesian society. This study aims to analyze the motives underlying living together behavior among university students in Malang City and to identify its impacts on social, academic, and health aspects. This research employs a qualitative approach using a case study design. The theoretical framework is based on the concept of behavioral deviance and Erik Erikson’s psychosocial development theory. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving students engaged in living together behavior. The findings indicate that: (1) the motives for living together include pleasure-seeking, peer influence, psychological factors (motivation and emotional dependence), and economic considerations; and (2) the impacts include anxiety or fear, mental and emotional health disturbances, reproductive health issues, and decreased academic focus. This study concludes that living together behavior is a multidimensional social phenomenon that requires preventive approaches and comprehensive social interventions.
