Abstract
Nurses Introduction: Nurses in Indonesia have experienced a continuous increase in workload due to the rising demand for healthcare services, fluctuating patient numbers, and limitations in human resources. This condition can create psychological pressure, leading to a higher risk of work-related stress. Previous studies have shown that excessive workload is one of the main factors contributing to stress among nurses.
Objectives: This study aims to identify the level of workload and work stress and analyze the relationship between workload and work stress among nurses at Dompu Regional Hospital.
Methods: This research used an analytical observational method with a cross-sectional design. The relationship between variables was analyzed using the Spearman correlation test. Data collection was carried out in August–September 2025 using questionnaires distributed to 154 nurses from a total population of 250 nurses. The instruments used were the Nursing Workload Questionnaire and the Nursing Stress Scale.
Results: The findings indicate a significant relationship between workload and work stress, with a significance value of p = 0.010 (p < 0.05). The strength of the relationship is classified as strong, with a correlation coefficient of 0.739, indicating that higher workload levels are associated with higher levels of work stress among nurses.
Conclusions: The strong and positive correlation shows that workload plays a major role in influencing nurses’ work stress. However, other factors not examined in this study may also contribute. The positive direction of the relationship indicates that an increase in workload is followed by an increase in work stress among nurses in the hospital setting.
