Abstract
Background: Dermatophytosis is a disease caused by colonization of dermatophyte fungi that attack tissues containing keratin such as stratum corneum, hair, and nails. Prolonged use of chemical drugs can lead to drug resistance. Ginger plants contain secondary metabolites that can inhibit the growth of harmful pathogen.
Objevtive: To determine the effect of red ginger extract (Zingiber officinale var rubrum) in inhibiting the growth of Trichophyton rubrum.
Methods: this study uses in vitro method with Trichophyton rubrum sample and dilution method to determine MIC and MFC with 6 red ginger concentration 100%, 80%, 60%, 40%, 20%, 0%. Data analysis using Kruskal Walis test and Post Hoc Mann Whitney test.
Result: the results showed that the MIC of red ginger extract (Zingiber officinale var rubrum) against Trichophyton rubrum obtained results of 20% while the MFC obtained results of 60%. Kruskal Walis test showed a significant effect due to the administration of red ginger extract. Post Hoc Mann Whitney test showed significant results (p=0.02) starting from concentration 20%, implying that the administration of red ginger extract can influence the reduction of Trichophyton rubrum colonies.
Conclusion: Red ginger extract (Zingiber officinale var rubrum) has an effect on inhibiting the growth of Trichophyton rubrum.
