Abstract
Relapse is a short drama film that explores the theme of memory flashbacks experienced by an individual in the moments leading up to death. The core idea of this film is rooted in neuroscientific research conducted by Dr. Ajmal Zemmar (2022), which found that human brain activity can continue for several seconds after the heart has stopped beating, indicating the possibility of memory replay during the final moments of life. The objective of this work is not merely to produce a film with strong cinematic quality, but also to convey a moral reflection to the audience about the importance of valuing life and cherishing the presence of loved ones before it is too late.
In this film, the role of the Director of Photography (DOP) is crucial in translating the emotional depth of the narrative into a poetic and intimate visual form. A warm yellow color tone is employed to create a sense of warmth intertwined with melancholy, while the use of long shots reinforces feelings of solitude and emotional emptiness experienced by the main character. Natural lighting serves as an emotional bridge between reality and memory, presenting a visual atmosphere that is calm yet rich in meaning.
Overall, Relapse is expected to contribute theoretically to the development of cinematography studies, particularly in relation to the role and aesthetic sensitivity of a Director of Photography in constructing visual language. Furthermore, this work is intended to serve as a practical reference for other short film filmmakers in creating visually driven narratives that are emotionally resonant, reflective, and impactful.
