Abstract
Background: Emergency Department (ED) nurses face demanding work conditions characterized by unpredictable patient flow, critical cases, and long working hours. These conditions contribute to high workload and may trigger significant occupational stress, potentially decreasing performance and patient safety. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between workload and work stress among nurses in the Emergency Department of Jombang Regional General Hospital.
Methods: A quantitative study with a cross-sectional correlational design was conducted involving 36 nurses selected using simple random sampling from a total population of 39 ED nurses. Workload was measured using the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index (NASA-TLX), while work stress was assessed with the Occupational Stress Inventory-Revised Edition (OSI-R). Data were analyzed using Spearman’s rho correlation test.
Results: The findings showed that most nurses experienced a moderately high workload (61.5%) and high work stress (64.1%). Spearman’s rho test revealed a significant positive correlation between workload and work stress (r = 0.395, p = 0.013), indicating that higher workload is associated with higher levels of work stress.
Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between workload and work stress among nurses in the ED of RSUD Jombang. Effective workload management and stress-reduction strategies are essential to maintain nurses’ well-being and ensure the quality of emergency care services.
