Background: Cirrhosis is widespread liver damage, characterized by fibrosis and changes in normal liver structure into structurally abnormal nodules. Cirrhosis is most commonly caused by infection with the hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and alcohol consumption. Symptoms most likely to occur in the later stages of hypertension include portal hypertension, hematemesis and melena,
ascites, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (BSP), hepatic encephalopathy, and hepatorenal syndrome. SBP is an acute bacterial infection of the peritoneal fluid (ascites) without intra-abdominal infection or intestinal perforation. Because the predominant bacteria are Escherichia coli, the preferred antibiotic for SBP is a third
generation cephalosporin.
objective: This study was conducted to describe the pattern of use of third generation cephalosporin antibiotics, including the route of administration, dosage, combination pattern, switch pattern, and how long it was administered to patients with liver cirrhosis with SBP.
Methode: This research is observational, namely a retrospective study using a consecutive sampling method in patients with liver cirrhosis with SBP from December 2022 to December 2024.
Results and Conclusions: Third-generation cephalosporins were use in 23 patients (100%). The most common use was ceftriaxone (2x1g)iv in 16 patients (66%). There was one switch pattern in 1 patient, namely ceftriaxone (2x1g)iv → cefotaxime (3x2g)iv. There were no combination patterns in any of the patients. The duration of third-generation cephalosporin therapy was 5-7 days in 14 patients
(58%).
