Abstract
Marriage is a sacred bond that unites two individuals in a commitment to live together. However, ineffective communication within a household often leads to conflict, where such conflict arises due to barriers in the communication process. The film "Dua Hati Biru" represents the reality of communication barriers that trigger conflicts among young couples, reflecting the dynamics of married life shaped by differences in perspectives, psychological unpreparedness, and external pressures. This study aims to examine audience reception toward communication barriers that trigger conflicts among young couples in the film "Dua Hati Biru", as well as to understand how viewers interpret the delivered messages through Stuart Hall’s encoding and decoding reception analysis approach. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through interviews and documentation. The analysis focuses on audience positions within three categories: dominant hegemonic position, negotiated position, and oppositional position. The results indicate that the majority of viewers interpret the communication barriers depicted in the film as a realistic visualization of problems often experienced by couples who get married due to a "married by accident" situation. Communication conflicts in the film emerge due to barriers such as differences in perspectives, lack of openness leading to misunderstandings, inappropriate language and tone, and the unstable communication behavior and emotional instability of the characters Dara and Bima, as well as external pressure from Bima’s mother. Most viewers fall into the oppositional position, showing a counter-stereotypical stance toward the conflicts portrayed in the film.
