Abstract
This study was motivated by the need for research on the effectiveness of natural ingredients in overcoming the growth of the pathogenic fungus Candida albicans which causes vaginal discharge symptoms. Vaginal discharge is one of the symptoms caused by infection with the pathogenic fungus Candida albicans. Infection occurs due to humid air and poor hygiene and if not treated immediately can cause vaginal candidiasis. Symptoms of vaginal discharge due to Candida albicans can be overcome by using chemical drugs such as ketoconazole, nystatin and amphotericin. Long-term use of chemical drugs is highly discouraged because it can cause side effects such as fungal resistance, dependency effects, trigger allergic reactions in some sufferers and the use of drugs is quite limited because it must be used with a doctor's prescription.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of jasmine flower extract (Jasminum sambac) on the growth of Candida albicans fungus and to describe the results of the study as a source of learning biology. This research was conducted at the Biomedical Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine, University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The type of research used was true experimental research. The research design used was an experimental laboratory study with the posttest-only control group design. In this design there are two groups, namely the experimental group and the control group. The experimental design used was a non-factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 7 treatments (3.125%, 6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, 50%, Candida albicans as a negative control, and ketoconazole as a positive control). Analysis of research data using qualitative and quantitative descriptive through the One Way ANOVA test of the SPSS program.
The results of the study showed that the content of jasmine flower extract has an effect on the growth of Candida albicans fungus. This can be proven based on the results of the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) test of jasmine flower ethanol extract at a concentration of 12.5% which looks clear so that it can inhibit the growth of Candida albicans fungus. The results of the Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) test of jasmine flower ethanol extract can kill the growth of Candida albicans starting from an extract concentration of 6.25%. The results of the one-way ANOVA test showed that the significance value obtained was 0.000. Based on the ANOVA test criteria, the MBC test on jasmine flower extract against Candida albicans fungus showed a significant effect because the ANOVA test results obtained were 0.000 (p. value <0.05). Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that jasmine flower extract has a fairly effective effect on the growth of the pathogenic fungus Candida albicans so that this study can be used as a reference for learning biology resources.
