Abstract

SOCIAL CRITICISM IN SONG LYRICS
(A Semiotic Analysis of the Song “Bermalam Bintang” by the Band Rebellion Rose)
Edo Japindo Panggayub, Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang
Songs not only serve as a medium of entertainment, but can also be an effective means of communication for conveying social criticism of individuals or groups who are considered to have deviated from norms or crossed boundaries in society. The punk genre, for example, often contains lyrics that voice such social criticism. As a medium of communication, songs contain signs and meanings that can be interpreted based on customs, culture, and symbolic agreements within society. This study aims to uncover the form of social criticism in the lyrics of the song “Bermalam Bintang” by the band Rebellion Rose through Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic approach. The method used is a qualitative approach with an interpretive research type, where the researcher acts as the main instrument in interpreting the object based on relevant theory and data. De Saussure's semiotic theory explains that a sign consists of two elements: the signifier (the physical form) and the signified (the conceptual idea or meaning of the sign). In this song, Rebellion Rose voices criticism of a social system deemed deviant, while urging listeners to remain independent, recognize their respective roles, and collectively strive for the freedom they desire.
