Abstract
This study aims to uncover the interpretations of Yura Yunita's short film "Tenang" (Calm) by Generation Z students who are active members of the Kine Klub at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The film explores the themes of loss, inner reflection, and the search for peace, poetically presented through visual and musical approaches. The approach used in this study is Stuart Hall's reception theory, which divides audience positions into three categories: dominant position, negotiating position, and oppositional position. The method used in this study was a qualitative approach, with data collection techniques consisting of in-depth interviews with six research subjects. The subjects were selected based on their active involvement in the film industry and their demographic characteristics as members of Generation Z. The researcher analyzed the subjects' responses to the narrative, cinematography, song lyrics, and visual expressions in "Tenang" to examine how each individual interpreted the message.
The results indicate that the majority of subjects occupied a dominant position, fully accepting the film's message as an emotional reflection of loss and the process of achieving inner peace. Some subjects occupied a negotiating position, reinterpreting the film's message based on their personal experiences and emotional states, without rejecting the overall meaning. One subject indicated an oppositional stance, emotionally rejecting the dominant meaning due to personal experiences that did not align with the film's message. In conclusion, the film Tenang successfully conveyed a powerful and touching message, and triggered a variety of emotional interpretations from the audience. This research demonstrates that audiences' interpretations of media are active, complex, and heavily influenced by their social background and individual psychological state. This study also reinforces the importance of media as a space for reflection and emotional validation for Generation Z in understanding mental health issues and self-acceptance.
