Abstract

Sari, Ayu Silvia. Tunjungsari, Feny. Abdillah, Andi. 2025. The Effect of Family History of Breast Cancer on Breast Cancer Risk. Literature Review, Faculty of Medicine, University of Muhammadiyah Malang.
Background: Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer affecting women globally with a high burden of morbidity and mortality. One of the main risk factors that has been widely studied is family history, especially first degree relationships such as mothers or sisters.
Objective: This study aims to determine the influence of family history on the increased risk of breast cancer.
Methods: This writing uses a narrative review approach with a literature review of accredited journals between 2020-2025 that are relevant to the topic.
Results : Women with a first-degree family history of breast cancer have a two to four times higher risk of developing the same disease. The combination of genetic and environmental factors amplifies cancer predisposition. Inherited genetic mutations such as BRCA1/2, PALB2, ATM, and CHEK2 contribute to increased cancer susceptibility. In addition, patients with a family history show a more aggressive tumor profile and are often diagnosed at a younger age. However, higher vigilance also leads to earlier diagnosis and a relatively better prognosis if treated promptly.
Conclusion: Family history is a clinically significant risk factor for breast cancer. Early detection through genetic screening and public education are key in risk-based cancer prevention strategies.
