Abstract
Family is the first community that supports children's development. Parents must fulfill their children's needs, both emotional and physical, while also shaping their children's behavior. This is closely related to the chosen parenting style. In addition, parenting style varies among families due to several factors like socioeconomic status, education and personality. The "Instant Family" movie has inspirational lessons learned, especially highlighting the challenges of rising adopted children. This research aims to analyze 1) types of parenting styles and 2) the effect of parenting styles used by the main characters on children’s behavior. The researcher used Diana Baumrind’s theory as a reference in categorizing parenting styles that contain authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved parenting styles. This research used descriptive qualitative research to describe the parenting style and its effect in “Instant Family” movie. The object of this research is the “Instant Family” movie, with scenes containing the parenting style used by Ellie and Pete in the movie. To analyze the data, the researcher identified and classified all the scenes containing the parenting style used by the main characters based on Diana Baumrind’s theory. The result of this study found that there are three types of parenting style that implemented by Ellie and Pete towards their children; authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive. There are relations between Ellie and Pete’s parenting style and their children’s behavior like children are good in academics. However, they also lack self-control, are less aware of the limits of acceptable behavior, and are resistant and non-compliant.
