Abstract

Smartphone addiction can lead to asthenopia due to excessive screen exposure, which reduces tear production, causing dry eyes, irritation, blurred vision, and eye pain. If left unchecked, this condition can worsen eye health and reduce comfort and productivity. This study aims to determine the relationship between smartphone addiction and asthenopia symptoms in nursing students at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This cross-sectional study uses the Spearman Rho correlation test to analyze the relationship between two variables. The sample consisted of 150 students of the Nursing Study Program, University of Muhammadiyah Malang, who were selected by purposive sampling for one month. Data analysis was carried out by non-parametric statistical tests. The study found that most nursing students were moderately addicted to smartphones (80.7%). Meanwhile, 34.7% did not experience asthenopia, while the other 65.3% experienced mild to severe symptoms. The Spearman Rho correlation test showed a significant relationship between smartphone addiction and asthenopia symptoms (r = 0.377, p = 0.000), so the higher the smartphone addiction, the higher the likelihood of developing asthenopia.Smartphone addiction is associated with asthenopia symptoms in nursing students at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Muhammadiyah Malang.
