Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus type 2 is a chronic disease caused by impaired function or
production of insulin that causes hyperglycemia. Treatment compliance is important to
prevent complications and improve quality of life. Family support plays a role in helping
regular drug consumption.
Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between family support and
medication compliance in type 2 DM patients at the Muhammadiyah University Hospital of
Malang.
Method: This study used a quantitative approach with a correlational study design. Sampling
was carried out by purposive sampling with a total of 92 type 2 DM patients at UMM Hospital.
The research instrument was a questionnaire that measured the level of family support and
medication compliance. Data analysis was carried out using the Spearman Rank test.
Results: The results showed that the majority of patients had a high level of family support
(83.7%) and a high level of medication compliance (76.1%). The results of statistical tests
showed a significant relationship between family support and medication adherence (p =
0.000; p < 0.05).
Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between family support and medication
adherence in type 2 DM patients at UMM Hospital. It is hoped that the role of the family can
continue to be improved in supporting patients to undergo regular treatment.
