Abstract
Background : Parenting styles significantly influence child development, especially during the preschool years (4-6 years), known as the golden age. Socio-cultural differences between rural and urban areas can affect parenting practices, impacting children's social, emotional, and cognitive development. This study aims to identify differences in parenting styles between parents in rural and urban areas. Methods : This study employed a descriptive comparative design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 100 respondents were selected using total sampling, consisting of 50 parents from rural areas and 50 from urban areas. Data were collected using the PSDQ (Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire) and analyzed using the Chi-Square test. Results : Democratic parenting was dominant in rural areas (40%), while authoritarian parenting was more prevalent in urban areas (35%). Permissive parenting was found in a small portion of respondents in both areas (5%). Statistical analysis revealed significant differences in parenting styles between rural and urban parents (χ²(1) = 36.000, p < 0.001). Conclusion : There are significant differences in parenting styles between rural and urban parents. Parents in rural areas tend to adopt democratic parenting styles, while parents in urban areas are more inclined to apply authoritarian parenting styles.
