Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyze and describe junior high school students' ability to understand mathematical concepts in relation to self-efficacy and independent learning. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, involving four eighth-grade students from SMP Muhammadiyah 8 Batu as subjects. The research instruments consist of test sheets, interviews, and questionnaires on self-efficacy and independent learning. Data analysis techniques include data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that students with high self-efficacy and independent learning fulfill all indicators of mathematical conceptual understanding, namely restating concepts, presenting perceptions through mathematical visual representations, and applying algorithms to solve mathematical problems. In contrast, students with low self-efficacy and independent learning only meet the indicator of restating concepts but have not fully grasped the indicators of presenting perceptions through mathematical visual representations and applying algorithms in problem-solving. Students with low self-efficacy but high independent learning meet the indicators of restating concepts and applying algorithms to solve mathematical problems, although they require some guidance from others to validate their answers. However, they have not fully mastered the indicator of presenting perceptions through mathematical visual representations. Meanwhile, students with moderate self-efficacy and low independent learning understand the indicators of restating concepts and applying algorithms in mathematical problem-solving but require guidance from others to maintain consistency in their responses.
