Abstract
Introduction: Excessive smartphone use had a negative impact on mental health, which referred to cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and social losses. In addition, smartphones had a negative impact on their users, especially students, namely with psychological and physical health problems, depression, anxiety, sleep problems, and fatigue, and academic stress
Objectives: to determine the relationship between smartphone addiction and sleep quality and academic stress in nursing students at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang.
Methods: This study was a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, conducted the study with 220 nursing students, the sampling technique in this study was probability sampling, the instruments used were the Perceived academic stress (PASS) scale and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire, and smartphone addiction scale – short version (SAV-SV). This research was carried out from August to September.
Results: The probability value (p value) of the relationship between the variables Smartphone Addiction and Sleep Quality was <,001, so Ho was rejected and Hi was accepted. And the probability value (p value) of the relationship between the variables Smartphone Addiction and Academic Stress was <,001, so Ho was rejected and Hi was accepted
Conclusions: There was a significant relationship between smartphone addiction and sleep quality and academic stress.
