Abstract

Fairness is the most essential thing to implement in assessments for students. This research focused on identifying how are student’s perception of assessment fairness and what aspects that influence of assessment fairness at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The research was conducted using a qualitative method with phenomenology study. Data collection is using an interview and questionnaire. The participant is University of Muhammadiyah Malang Students class of 2022 and 2021 with different faculties. The result of this research found eight students' perceptions and four aspects that affect assessment fairness at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Students perceived a lack of fairness in grading practices, perceived disparity between student effort and the grades awarded, transparency in assessment processes. There is a perceived disparity between student effort and the grades awarded. The study also highlights the impact of various factors on fairness perceived, including the mode of instruction, assignment structure, and gender. While race and ethnicity were not perceived as major factors. This may involve developing clear and consistent grading criteria, providing regular feedback to students, and establishing effective channels for addressing student concerns. Future researchers could explore more precisely the aspects that lead to students' sense of injustice and can provide more insights into the complexities of assessment fairness.
