Abstract

This research is entitled "Representation of Sexual Violence against Women in the Film Penyalin Cahaya (Semiotic Study in the Film "Penyalin Cahaya" by Wregas Bhanuteja). Penyalin Cahaya (Photocopier) is an Indonesian film that will be broadcast in 2021 and directed by Wregas Bhanuteja. The aim of this research is to find out the meaning behind the symbols/signs in the film "Penyalin Cahaya" which relate to sexual violence. A symbol is something that does not show what it is or does not show itself. Film is a mass communication medium that can change or influence other people or audiences by using the messages in it. The film "Penyalin cahaya" as a depiction of social reality tells about the form of resistance of victims against perpetrators of sexual violence who receive special treatment from those in power. The large number of cases of sexual violence in Indonesia prompted researchers to conduct this research by uncovering the meaning behind the symbols/signs related to sexual violence in the film "Penyalin Cahaya".
This light-copying film conveys a message about victims of sexual violence, especially women, and perpetrators in the social sphere. This research uses a qualitative descriptive research method using Roland Barthes' Semiotics research theory, where the research data is in the form of writing and the results are obtained through 3 stages of analysis, namely denotation, connotation and myth. The results of this research are facts related to public assumptions circulating regarding sexual violence, which have been believed by the public to the point of becoming myths. The sexual violence in the film "Penyalin Cahya" was carried out personally based on the perpetrator's fetish and the perpetrator took advantage of the victim by taking pictures of the victim's body and using the pictures as an installation for the Mata Hari theater exhibition. Sexual violence in this film does not occur physically with sexual activity, but occurs indirectly without the victim's knowledge.
