Abstract

This study analyzed the language styles used by Eric Nam in the Dive Studios Podcast through a qualitative descriptive approach. The subject was Eric Nam as featured on the Dive Studios YouTube channel, with data collected from six episodes across different seasons. The findings revealed that the casual style was the most commonly used (29 instances), reflecting the podcast’s relaxed and conversational tone, often involving personal stories and lively interactions with guests. The consultative style appeared 19 times, demonstrating Eric’s ability to structure discussions and maintain a guided conversational flow. The intimate style occurred 7 times, typically in personal conversations addressing life challenges, motivations, or inside jokes with close friends. In contrast, formal and frozen language styles were avoided to maintain the podcast’s friendly and approachable atmosphere. The target audience primarily consists of individuals aged 18 to 34, particularly K-pop fans attracted to the celebrity guests featured in each episode. While formal and frozen styles are generally reserved for highly professional or official contexts, the podcast’s use of casual and consultative styles aligns well with its youthful, globally-minded audience. These findings provide insights into the sociolinguistic aspects of Eric Nam’s communication in the Dive Studios Podcast. They also serve as a reference for understanding language styles in media, particularly for studies focusing on informal yet structured communication.
