Abstract

The 2022 Kanjuruhan tragedy, which caused numerous casualties, prompted a response from the Paper Power community in Malang. This community utilized posters as a medium for social critique against the government and law enforcement. This study aims to analyze the meaning of signs in these posters using Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotics theory, focusing on the relationship between the signifier and the signified. This qualitative descriptive research employs semiotic analysis on posters distributed through social media and community platforms. The findings reveal that the posters contain visual and textual elements reflecting criticism, solidarity, and demands for justice. By emphasizing syntagmatic and paradigmatic analyses, this study highlights the role of posters as an effective visual communication tool in social movements. This research contributes to the study of semiotics, visual communication, and serves as a reference for media analysis in the context of social movements.
