Abstract
Background: Cognitive decline was a significant challenge among the elderly, often
reducing independence and quality of life. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness
of Brain Gym exercises in improving cognitive function in elderly individuals with mild to
moderate memory impairments.
Methods: The research used a descriptive case study design involving three participants
aged over 60 years (Ny. A, 76 years; Ny. S, 74 years; Ny. K, 60 years) living in Banjarejo
Village, Malang. Each participant attended Brain Gym sessions three times a week for 15–
20 minutes per session. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and the Short
Portable Mental Status Questionnaire (SPMSQ) to measure cognitive function before and
after the intervention.
Results: The results showed a significant improvement in cognitive function for all
participants. Ny. A and Ny. S improved their SPMSQ scores from 5 and 6 (mild to moderate
impairment) to 2 (intact intellectual function). Meanwhile, Ny. K's score increased from 5
to 4, indicating partial recovery. Participants reported better memory retention, motivation,
and engagement in daily activities. These findings showed that Brain Gym effectively
increased blood flow and oxygenation to the brain, optimizing neuronal activity and
memory capacity.
Discussion: This study concluded that Brain Gym was a practical and accessible
intervention to reduce cognitive decline in the elderly. It was recommended to integrate
Brain Gym into public health programs due to its ease of implementation and cost-
effectiveness. Further research with larger samplke sizes and longer durations was needed
to validate these findings and explore broader applications.
