Abstract
Background: Dementia is a term that describes a disease that affects memory, thinking and the ability to perform daily activities. Non-pharmacological therapy to prevent and improve cognitive function is cognitive rehabilitation therapy, one of which is brain gym memory training. This final Scientific Paper raises the case of Mrs. R who has suffered from dementia for more than 1 year, allegedly because she has a history of forgetting the way home, her usual scheduled daily activities, and time disorientation. This final scientific paper aims to determine the effect of implementing brain gymnastics to improve cognitive function in the elderly with dementia.
Method: This research method uses a case study report according to the Nursing Process rules with data collection techniques in the form of anamnesis, observation, physical examination and documentation studies to patients, namely Mrs. R and her family and using the SPMSQ and MMSE instruments.
Results: Based on the results of the assessment, the main diagnosis raised was memory disorders. The intervention given was memory training in the form of brain gymnastics with SPMSQ and MMSE scores before training 6 and 11, while the scores after brain gymnastics were 4 and 16, meaning that there was an increase in cognitive before and after being given brain gymnastics.
Discussions: Brain gymnastics is a simple movement to improve cognition by balancing parts of the brain and increasing neurogenesis and hippocampal function. Routine implementation of brain gymnastics properly and correctly can improve the patient’s cognitive function as evidenced by an increase in SPMSQ (4) and MMSE (16) scores. Not only that, recommendations that can be given to patients are environmental comfort and family support for the smoothness and success of the intervention.
