Abstract

Tempo Magazine is a weekly magazine that has a special column for presenting illustrations. The magazine, which is famous for its critical messages, presents more topics in the social and political fields in each of its publications. Tempo Magazine, which was published in the 8-14 July 2024 edition, is based on education and political issues. In this study, the researcher analyzed the multimodal critical discourse in the investigation of the fake professor scandal. The data for this study used the 8-14 July 2024 edition of Tempo magazine. More precisely, using the cover image, illustration, title, and article in the Tempo investigation. In this multimodal discourse analysis, the researcher found a problem formulation, namely how to analyze the multimodal critical discourse in the 8-14 July 2024 edition of Tempo magazine in the case of the fake professor scandal. In its analysis, it uses an interpretive qualitative approach with a critical paradigm. This study uses the theory of multimodal discourse analysis to reveal the ideological meaning behind the illustrations. The illustrations are analyzed using Kress and Leeuwen's visual grammar theory, while the linguistic mode is analyzed using Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory. The results of this study show that Tempo portrays professors negatively in its investigation cases through its image mode and linguistic mode. Its illustrations and linguistic modes are also implicit.
