Abstract

Dicky Putra Maulana. NIM 202010040311159. Communication Science Study Program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The Meaning of Social Criticism in the Film The Whale (Roland Barthes' Semiotic Analysis of the Film The Whale). Thesis 2024.
Currently, there are various social issues that occur in society ranging from issues of social inequality, issues about family relationships and issues about gender equality which are raised into films to build relationships with audiences that involve feelings emotionally and convey criticism of the issues being raised. The purpose of this study is to find out how the meaning of social criticism is constructed in the film The Whale.
This study uses the semiotic theory by Roland Barthes known as the Order of Significations. This theory is intended to interpret into the form of information about a hidden meaning behind a sign consisting of denotative meaning, connotative meaning and myth. This study uses a qualitative method with an interpretive approach to reveal signs of social criticism constructed in the film The Whale and to validate events that occur in society by presenting contextual data that is in accordance with the object of study in the study. The results of the study indicate that the problems experienced by society are so complex and interrelated and cause cause and effect from the consequences of every error or deviation. The film The Whale criticizes problems in society related to religion, individuals and families and highlights all the consequences of every decision without considering negative or positive impacts.
