Abstract
Background: Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin condition affecting the pilosebaceous unit, characterized by lesions such as papules, pustules, or nodules that commonly appear on the face, body, and back. This condition is prevalent among adolescents and young adults, with a prevalence rate between 35% and 90% among teenagers, particularly starting from ages 7-12 years and potentially continuing into the third decade of life. Acne vulgaris patients often experience psychological impacts such as anxiety, depression, and significant decrease in quality of life. Studies indicate that medical students are more susceptible to stress and sleep disorders, which can exacerbate acne vulgaris conditions. External factors influencing the emergence of acne vulgaris include stress, climate, cosmetics, diet, and medications. Meanwhile, physiological factors involved in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris include increased androgen hormones that trigger excessive sebum production, pore blockage due to dead skin cell accumulation, and inflammation triggered by Propionibacterium acnes bacteria in the pilosebaceous duct.
Objective: The aim of this research is to determine the influence of sleep quality on the incidence of acne vulgaris on students at the Faculty of Medicine, Muhammadiyah University of Malang.
Method: This research is quantitative research using a descriptive observational approach. This type of research is cross-sectional research. This research uses primary data collected through filling out questionnaires and tested on students from the Faculty of Medicine, Muhammadiyah University of Malang, class of 2021.
Result: The results of the test using Chi-Square obtained a significance value of 0.005 (p<0.05), which shows that there was a significant relationship between sleep quality and the incidence of acne vulgaris.
Conclusion: There was a significant relationship between sleep quality and the incidence of acne vulgaris (AV) on students at the Faculty of Medicine, Muhammadiyah University of Malang, with poor sleep quality increasing the risk of AV occurrence.
