Abstract
Background: There is a significant difference between developing and developed
countries in breast cancer incidence and high incidence rate in Indonesia. Major risk
factors for breast cancer include exposure to endogenous and exogenous estrogen.
Women who are childless or have their first child after the age of 30 have a higher
risk due to longer estrogen exposure.
Objective: This study aims to analyze the correlation between parity and first
pregnancy age with breast cancer incidence in women at the surgical outpatient
clinic of UMM General Hospital for the period 2021-2023.
Methods: This study was an analytic observational study with a cross-sectional
approach. The study sample consisted of 40 respondents selected using purposive
sampling technique. Data were obtained through interview questionnaires and
medical records. Data analysis was performed using the Chi-Square statistical test
to analyze the correlation between parity and first pregnancy age with breast cancer
incidence.
Results: Data analysis showed a significant correlation between parity and breast
cancer incidence, with the highest proportion in the multiparous group (47.5%) and
the chi-square test resulted in a p-value of 0.014. In addition, first pregnancy age
also showed a significant correlation with a p-value of 0.031, where 42.5% of
women who became pregnant under the age of 30 and 45% of women who became
pregnant after the age of 30 were diagnosed with breast cancer.
Conclusion: There is a correlation between parity and first pregnancy age with
breast cancer incidence in women at the surgical outpatient clinic of UMM General
Hospital for the period 2021-2023.
