Abstract
Background: Tongue cancer is one type of cancer that can affect the oral organs, especially the tongue. Cancer patients need adequate medical management, one of which is chemotherapy. Chemotherapy has many side effects, one of the most common side effects is nausea and vomiting. Until now, cancer patients who experience post-chemotherapy nausea and vomiting are generally only given pharmacological treatment in the form of antiemetics. There needs to be other therapy options that are effective in helping reduce post-chemotherapy nausea and vomiting, one of which is in the form of aromatherapy. This writing aims to determine the effectiveness of peppermint aromatherapy in reducing nausea and vomiting in tongue cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
Method: The research method uses case study reports on patients with tongue cancer according to the Nursing Process rules using data collection techniques in the form of interviews, observation, documentation, and using the INVR Index of Nausea, Vomiting, and Recthing instrument. The data analysis used is domain analysis with results that will include nursing problems, nursing interventions, and evaluation of results.
Results: The implementation of peppermint aromatherapy to patients showed a decrease in the scale of nausea felt. Therefore, peppermint aromatherapy can be an alternative therapy that can be used to reduce nausea and vomiting in chemotherapy patients.
Discussions: Aromatherapy has become one of the complementary approaches warranted in supporting care, especially in tongue cancer patients who experience side effects of nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy administration. the use of peppermint aromatherapy can help relieve these symptoms through the mechanism of stimulating the limbic system in the brain, which affects mood and the body's response to stress.
