Abstract
Background: Patients with benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) who undergo Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) experience postoperative pain complaints, thus affecting the patient's quality of life and mental well-being. This Ners Final Scientific Work raises the case of Mr. A and Mr B who experienced acute pain after TUR-P. This final scientific work aims to evaluate the application of the Benson relaxation technique in reducing the intensity of pain in patients undergoing the TUR-P procedure.
Method: The research method for this Final Scientific Work of Ners uses a qualitative case study report which focuses on an in-depth exploration of Mr A and Mr B's response to the Benson relaxation technique intervention. The research was carried out in the surgical inpatient room in the period July and August 2024. In evaluating the pain of Mr A and Mr B, the researcher used an observation sheet in the form of a progress note which included subjective and objective data. The pain scale measurement used the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS).
Results: After the intervention of Benson relaxation technique for 3 consecutive days, it significantly reduced the intensity of pain in the patient. The patient's pain scale decreased from 5-6 to pain scale 1, grimace decreased, sleep patterns improved, protective attitudes decreased, and Mr A's pulse frequency was 80x/min and Mr B 88x/min.
Discussion: The main nursing problem in Mr Mr A and Mr B are acute pain. Benson relaxation given as a nursing intervention is able to inhibit sympathetic nerve activity, so that the body experiences a decrease in oxygen consumption and reduces muscle tension. The dominance of the parasympathetic nervous system that occurs also serves to reduce heart rate and blood pressure. In the process of relaxation there is an increase in neurotransmitter production so that endorphin appears in the body to function as a natural pain reliever.
