Abstract
Background: Hospitals play a critical role in delivering comprehensive healthcare services, both curative and preventive, with nursing care as one of its primary focuses. The nursing handover process is crucial to maintaining the continuity of patient care. The Situation Background Assessment Recommendation (SBAR) communication technique is recommended for handovers as it effectively improves the quality of nursing care. However, its implementation in the Jimbaran Ward of Saiful Anwar General Hospital Malang remains suboptimal, where most nurses still use the SOAP method.
Objective: This study aims to analyze the implementation of nursing handovers using the SBAR communication technique in the Jimbaran Ward of Saiful Anwar General Hospital Malang.
Method: The study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive phenomenological method. Data were collected through interviews, direct observations, and document analysis. The research subjects consisted of 9 implementing nurses in the Jimbaran Ward.
Results: The findings show that the application of the SBAR technique is inconsistent across shifts. During the first shift, SBAR is partially applied under the supervision of the head nurse, while in the second and third shifts, the handover process uses the SOAP method. The inhibiting factors include long-standing habits, limited supervision, and uneven understanding of SBAR.
Conclusion: Implementing the SBAR communication technique in nursing handovers can improve the continuity and quality of nursing care. Optimizing SBAR implementation requires continuous supervision, education, and commitment from the entire nursing team.
