Abstract
Background : Hypercholesterolemia is a condition where total cholesterol levels in the blood are high, namely ≥ 200 mg/dl (NCD Profiles, n.d.). Excessive cholesterol levels in the blood can increase the risk of atherosclerosis and trigger coronary heart disease. The main causes of hypercholesterolemia include the habit of consuming high-fat foods, low fruit and vegetable intake, low physical activity, hypertension, obesity, stress, smoking and alcohol consumption (Iriti et al., 2020).
Objective : This research was conducted to determine the antihypercholesterolemic potential of plants in the malvaceae family which can be proven from several literatures discussing the potential of lady's fingers, bastard cedar and rosella plants as antihypercholesterolemic.
Method : This research uses descriptive qualitative research methodology, namely literature studies from various bibliographic sources from research articles both nationally and internationally. National keywords are “Malvaceae” AND “Hypercholesterolemia”, “Okra” AND “Hiperkolesterolemia”, “Jati belanda” AND “Hiperkolesterolemia”, “Rosella” AND “Hiperkolesterolemia”. Meanwhile, the keywords for international articles are “Abelmoschus esculentus” AND “Hypercholesterolemia”, “Guazuma ulmifolia” AND “Hypercholesterolemia”, “Hibiscus sabdariffa” AND “Hypercholesterolemia”. With a range of years 2014-2024. Articles are full-text and open access from providers such as google Scholar, pubmed, and science Direct.
Results and Conclusion : Based on the research, 18 articles were obtained, and the results indicate that lady's fingers, bastard cedar and rosella have efficacy as antihypercholesterolemia, because they contain several compounds such as xi flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids, tannins, polyphenols, pectin, phenolic, phenol, sterols, and anthocyanins. In the malvaceae family, the most potential compounds as antihypercholesterolemia were found in the flavonoid content of o lady's fingers, bastard cedar and rosella. The mechanism of action of the compound most commonly found in the malvaceae family as anti-hypercholesterolemia is its role as an antioxidant, which is found in compounds and groups of flavonoids, phenolics and tannins..
