Abstract
This study is driven by the researcher’s interest in understanding the phenomenon of long-distance marriages (LDM) during the early years of marriage, particularly how these couples navigate and manage communication conflicts. The initial five years of marriage are often recognized as a critical period for relationship building, which becomes especially challenging when partners are separated for extended periods. The objective of this study is to examine the conflict management processes in communication among long-distance married couples in the early stages of marriage.
The research applies Stevenin’s five-step model for conflict resolution—comprising identification, diagnosis, solution agreement, implementation, and evaluation. This framework is further integrated with relational dialectics theory, providing insights into the dynamics and relational tensions within intimate partnerships, particularly in the context of marriage.
A qualitative approach uses a case study methodology to obtain comprehensive and in-depth data.
Findings indicate that conflicts often stem from differing interpretations of messages exchanged between partners. Key triggers for communication conflict among LDM couples include differences in availability for communication and varying levels of personal commitments. The wife frequently takes an active role in conflict communication. Reaching solutions requires specific approaches, including accommodative and collaborative efforts. Additionally, the implementation of solutions often involves compromise to promote relational equity. After solutions are enacted, couples engage in evaluative practices, such as mutual reflection and discussion, to assess outcomes and reinforce understanding.
