Abstract
Second marriages are often chosen for a number of reasons, but unfortunately they are more prone to divorce than first marriages. Because of some of the new challenges that are undertaken, it requires several different efforts to maintain relationship maintenance in second marriages. Researchers conducted interviews with five interviewees who were in their second marriage.
This study uses Stafford and Canary's relationship maintenance strategy which includes eight efforts, namely Positivity, Openness, Assurances, Understanding, Social Network, Relationship Talk, Self-disclosure, and Sharing Tasks. Furthermore,
This research uses case study research with a qualitative approach to obtain in-depth data from the interviewees.
The results of this study found that relationship maintenance efforts
assurance points are the main points they do even before undergoing a second marriage. Those who experienced a death divorce focused more on spending time with their partner, while those who experienced a life divorce tried not to repeat the mistakes of the previous marriage. Female interviewees were more open in Self-disclosure, while men focused on Social Network and Sharing Tasks, men also tended to hide aspects of the past to maintain the feelings of the partner. Relationship Talk was used more by interviewees who had partners who were in their first marriage to discuss the desire to have children. Interviewees agreed in Understanding not to judge and try to apologize, and at the point of Self-disclosure by communicating more regularly with their partners.
