Abstract
Tumor, or neoplasm, is an abnormal mass formed due to the uncontrolled growth of cells. In developing countries, the diagnosis of breast tumors is often delayed, primarily due to a lack of awareness and attention to early signs of lumps in the breast. This study aims to explore the relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI) as an indicator of nutritional status and the incidence of breast tumors in elderly female patients at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang Hospital (UMM). This study uses an analytical observational method with a cross-sectional design, analyzing medical records of patients with benign and malignant breast tumors. The sample, determined via purposive sampling and the chi-square formula, included 13 patients, analyzed using SPSS version 26. This study found a significant relationship between body mass index (BMI) and breast tumor occurrence in elderly women, with a p-value of 0.027 from bivariate statistical analysis using the chi-square test. Among the 13 patients, most were aged 61-70 years and had a BMI above normal. Of these patients, 30.8% were diagnosed with malignant tumors, while 69.2% had benign tumors. In the normal BMI category, 15.4% had malignant tumors and 7.7% had benign tumors. In the overweight category, 15.4% had both types of tumors. In the obesity I category, 38.5% had benign tumors, while no malignant tumors were observed in obesity II. There is a significant relationship between body mass index and the incidence of breast tumor in elderly women.
