Abstract

Lilis Lamiang is an object that has been passed down from generation to generation. However, as time progresses, Lilis Lamiang has undergone a semantic shift within the Dayak community, particularly among the people of Katingan Hulu. The Katingan Hulu community is a group of Dayak people who still hold strong beliefs regarding Lilis Lamiang. However, the development of time has triggered a shift in the meaning of Lilis Lamiang. This shift in meaning could potentially have either positive or negative impacts on the status of this object. This study aims to explore the transformation of Lilis Lamiang's meaning from a Gemeinschaft-based significance to a Gesellschaft-based one within the social life of the community, in accordance with contemporary developments. Therefore, this research is urgently needed to be published as an effort to preserve the existing culture in Katingan Hulu.
The research approach is qualitative with a descriptive method to illustrate the shift in the meaning of "lilis lamiang" from communal (gemeinschaft) to associational (gesellschaft), which is a sociological theory by Ferdinand Julius Tönnies, along with an analysis of social meaning based on Max Weber's theory. The type of research is ethnographic. Ethnographic research is highly suitable for exploring and analyzing data based on local wisdom. The subjects/sources of this research include the user community, traditional leaders, mantir, telun, Dewan Adat Dayak, and Balian, while the informants are the managers of the Balanga Museum in Palangka Raya and craftsmen. The data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation.
The research results indicate that the people of Katingan Hulu perceive "lilis lamiang" in a communal sense as a sacred heirloom of the Dayak tribe passed down by their ancestors; a ritual or sacred object; a holy item; a reflection of social status; an object rich in religious values; and a guide for life in traditional marriage processes. The shift in the meaning of "lilis lamiang" is quite significant. From the associational perspective, this shift occurs due to the utility and value of the object for the broader community, leaning towards the development of the Dayak community's identity and as a symbol of social and economic class. Additionally, it is regarded as a reflection of the identity of the Dayak tribe; used as a commodity; no longer tied to the Kaharingan belief; a symbol of the Dayak ethnicity in general; usable by the entire community; a symbol of fidelity in marriage rituals; a cultural heritage with high ancestral value; a representation of responsible leadership; a medium for learning in formal education systems; a manifestation of future orientation; and an expression of the highest respect for guests or invitees.
