Abstract

Abstract: Film is a public communication medium that reflects real life and holds profound significance in society. As an art form, film is not merely entertainment; it also serves as a social mirror that stimulates emotions and critical thinking. Disney, a leader in the animated film industry, has made significant contributions with strong characters and narratives. However, controversy arose regarding the casting of Halle Bailey as Ariel in the 2023 live-action film The Little Mermaid, which was perceived as racial discrimination. Nevertheless, this decision is considered a crucial step in promoting diversity and inclusivity in the film industry. This study aims to analyze the visual transformation in The Little Mermaid 2023 and its impact on cultural, social, and entertainment industry aspects. Using a qualitative approach and Roland Barthes' semiotic theory, this research finds that the visual transformation of Ariel's character into a Black woman challenges stereotypes and strengthens inclusive representation. This visual representation impacts public views on equality and diversity, conveying an important message about inclusivity and equality in the context of modern media.
