Abstract
Background: Skin diseases in 85% of adolescents are acne with varying causes. Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphyloccus aureus, and Propionibacterium acne are bacteria that commonly infect acne. Betel Leaf Essential Oil which contains betephenol functions as an antibacterial. Betel leaf essential oil is made into acne patches using a Polyvinyl alcohol base.
Objective: To determine the effect of the difference in PVA base concentration on the inhibition zone of antibacterial activity, and to determine the optimal concentration of PVA base in betel leaf essential oil patch preparations that have the highest antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria by well method.
Methods: The method used in this study is the well diffusion method. Three acne leaf essential oil patch formulas were tested for antibacterial activity with a blank comparator made from three formulas without betel leaf essential oil, positive control of Clindamycin Gel and negative control of aquadest. The measurement of the diameter of the inhibition zone was carried out using a caliper with an accuracy of 0.01 mm, then the data analysis was carried out statistically using SPSS 25.0.
Results and Conclusion: From the results of the study, it was concluded that the difference in the variation of Polyvinyl alcohol levels (5%, 6%, and 7%) had no effect on the antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria. The difference in increased levels of Polyvinyl alcohol provides better antibacterial activity.
