Abstract
Single fathers bear significant responsibilities within a family, and being a single father is not an easy task. The prevailing societal stigma often marginalizes and assumes that single fathers are incapable of fulfilling their dual parental roles. The negative perceptions directed towards single fathers are not baseless; their lower numbers compared to single mothers lead society to be skeptical about a single father's abilities. The quantity of single fathers in various countries, such as the United States and Indonesia, is considerably lower compared to single mothers.
The objective of this study is to explore the myths surrounding the struggles of single fathers portrayed in the film "Fatherhood" by Paul Weitz, utilizing qualitative research methods and semiotic analysis following Roland Barthes' model. This research will be analyzed using Roland Barthes' "Two Orders of Signification," comprising denotation, connotation, and myths. Data sources include primary data derived from the film "Fatherhood" by Paul Weitz, available on the paid streaming platform Netflix, as well as secondary data from relevant books, journals, internet articles, and other sources related to the research. Data collection involves documentation techniques by closely and repeatedly watching the film, identifying scenes, gathering data, and ultimately analyzing the data exhibiting signs or symbols constructing the achievements of single fathers in the film. This research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach, also referred to as exposition, within the constructivist paradigm.
The study reveals the existence of myths regarding the struggles of single fathers portrayed in Paul Weitz's film "Fatherhood." This is depicted through the character's, Matt Logelin, commendable achievements resulting from the efforts he puts forth while navigating his role as a single father, laden with various issues and negative stigmas from his surrounding environment, as he fulfills his dual parental role. Matt achieves success by defying the myth of negative stigma imposed upon him by his environment. The character of Matt Logelin as a single father in the film is portrayed as achieving success by overcoming numerous challenges, including social pressure, economic issues, psychological stability, and parenting obstacles.
