Abstract

Background: Epilepsy is a temporary event characterized by or with symptoms of seizures due to excessive or synchronous abnormalities of nerve activity in the brain. Epilepsy occurs twice or more with an interval of more than 24 hours, due to the release of excessive electrical charges in brain neurons (Hasibuan & Dimyati, 2020). The main therapy in epilepsy patients with antiepileptic drugs is with Phenytoin.
Objective: To describe the pattern of phenytoin use, including dosage form, dose, route, frequency in epilepsy patients in the Outpatient Department of Dr. Iskak Tulungagung Hospital.
Method: This study uses retrospective observational research with a descriptive method.
Results and Conclusions: The results of the study obtained 61 patients who used phenytoin. The pattern of single use was 21 patients (29%), a combination of two was 34 patients (47%), a combination of three was 15 patients (21%), a combination
of four was 2 patients (3%).
