Abstract
In fact, the understanding of class IV students at SDN Kauman 3 Malang City regarding the use of punctuation marks and capital letters is still quite low, so it is necessary to know the causes and factors for these problems and requires efforts and actions from teachers and the school. This research aims to find out: (1) find
out how mistakes are made in writing punctuation marks and capital letters in the essays of class IV students at SDN Kauman 3 Malang City and (2) find out what factors cause problems with the use of punctuation marks and capital letters in students' essays.
This research uses qualitative research and the type of research carried out is analytical research. As a data source, 20 students of SDN Kauman 3 Malang City participated in writing essays conducted by researchers. This research was
conducted on February 13 2024 in one stage, namely only taking written essays from class IV students at SDN Kauman 3, Malang City. Then conducted interviews with the school principal and homeroom teacher at SDN Kauman 3, Malang City.
Based on 10 students' essays analyzed in capital writing, it can be seen that error code D has the largest percentage, namely 44% with adequate criteria, and the second largest error is error code A with a percentage of 36% in the good category.
Meanwhile, error code B with a percentage of 8% is in the very good category. Based on 10 students' essays which were analyzed in punctuation writing, it can be seen that error code 1 has the largest percentage, namely 44% with adequate criteria, and the second largest error is error code 4 with a percentage of 16% in the good category. Meanwhile, error code 6 has the smallest error percentage, namely 0.8% in the very good category. As a result of this research, teachers are asked to always remind and emphasize to all students that learning Indonesian is very important when learning Indonesian. And before teaching and learning activities begin, the teacher should invite students to read together and briefly introduce the use of punctuation marks
and capital letters.
