Abstract
Humans always use calculations and numbers in everyday life. Mathematics also means the field of education which is very crucial for human life. In mathematics education, many factors must be considered, including ability, desire, teacher readiness, and student readiness, but the most important is the student's sex (gender). Gender is a psychosocial aspect that determines how a person acts and behaves in order to be accepted in their social environment. Gender differences can influence the way a person thinks and solves problems. The aim of this research is to determine the verbal and spatial strategies used by students in solving mathematics learning problems. The subjects used in this research were students of SMP Negeri 1 Balikpapan. The research method used is descriptive qualitative by observing students. The data collection techniques used were practice questions and questionnaires. In this study, it was found that male students found it easier to find the distance traveled in questions graphically rather than descriptively. Meanwhile, female students are more dominant in solving problems from the concept of space using verbal strategies, namely by describing answers. However, both students and students in this study were still less able to solve problems in mathematical form.
