Abstract
Idioms pose a significant challenge for English learners, as native speakers use them effortlessly in daily conversation while non-native speakers struggle to grasp their nuances (Je, 2015). Understanding idioms not only enhances communication with native speakers but also enriches language comprehension in diverse contexts (Alonso-Villa, 2019). This research aims (1) To find the idioms used by the character Marquis Vincent de Gramont in the movie John Wick: Chapter 4, (2) to identify the types, and (3) to discover the meaning of these idioms.
This research employs qualitative methods to analyze idiomatic expressions extracted from the script of the movie "John Wick: Chapter 4", specifically focusing on dialogue involving the antagonist character Marquis Vincent Bisset de Gramont. The researcher systematically identifies idioms using O’Dell and McCarthy’s theoretical framework, categorizing them by type and exploring their lexical meanings. The findings are structured into three main parts: the idioms themselves, their types, and their lexical definitions. Ultimately, the researcher draws conclusions based on these analyses.
The research findings include three main components: firstly, the identification of sixteen idioms. Secondly, these idioms are classified into six types: similes, trinomials, euphemisms, proverbs, clichés, fixed statements, and other languages. Lastly, the exploration and presentation of their lexical meanings provide a comprehensive understanding of their usage and significance within the context studied.
