Abstract
The research entitled “Representation of Nihilism in the character Joy in the Movie Everything Everywhere All At Once (Roland Barthes Semiotics Analysis)”, discusses how the character Joy represents the meaning of Nihilism.The purpose of the research is to find out what is the meaning of Nihilism represented by the character of Joy in the movie Everything Everywhere All At Once (Roland Barthes Semiotics Analysis).The purpose of the research is to find out what the meaning of Nihilism is represented by the character Joy. This research uses Roland Barthes' sign theory which Roland Barthes' semiotics is used as a research method. By using Barthes' model that focuses on denotation, connotation, and myth, the analysis technique is carried out by interpreting the visual and narrative signs of the film. Data collection in this study used documentation techniques. Nihilism in this movie is interpreted as the rejection of all aspects of life, such as ethics and morals. In addition, it is also a feeling of hopelessness and loss of meaning in life.The results of this study show that Joy is confronted with all versions of various universes when she is experiencing serious identity problems. This makes her believe that experiences or decisions don't matter when all choices happen at once.This research also explains that the character Joy in the movie Everything Everywhere All at Once demonstrates Nihilism through her destructive actions, sense of
loss of direction, and her identity confusion. Joy also experiences the negative impact of family relationships that are full of conflict, especially with Evelyn, which ultimately reinforces her feeling that life has no meaning. reinforces her feeling that life has no meaning.
