Abstract

The research aimed to analyze the types of errors made by the tenth-grade students of SMP Daarul Ukhuwwah Malang on using English articles in Public Speaking Script and analyze the cause of errors made by the students. The research subject was students of a Ninth-grade class consisting of 35 students. The research data related to the types of article errors were obtained from the student’s written assignments on public speaking scripts through the Checklist of Articles Errors as the instrument, while the data about the causes of errors were gathered through the interview as the technique and interview guide as the instrument.
The findings showed that students made various types of errors into three types: Omission, Redundant, and Incorrect usage. First, the high frequency of error is omission: 85 or 72% errors of omission. Next is Redundant; there are 25 or 22% of last is Incorrect usage; there are 8 or 6% errors of Incorrect usage. Furthermore, the findings show that there are 4 causes of errors: Interlanguage, Lack of explicit instruction, Lack of awareness, and Overgeneralization. This condition showed that the students find using English articles in descriptive text complex. Therefore, it is suggested that the teacher give more attention to this problem and improve students understanding.
