Abstract

This research is entitled "The Role of Family Communication in Smoking Incidents in Adolescents at SMP Negeri 11 Malang." This research aims to explain the role of family communication in preventing smoking behavior in adolescent children. The large number of teenagers who have become smokers should have become a very serious problem which should be of concern and it is necessary to take steps to prevent smoking behavior among teenagers. Family communication is a form of attention, encouragement that individuals receive from other people through interpersonal relationships which include attention, emotion and assessment. The role of family communication plays an important role in preventing teenage children from smoking based on the results of this research. In this research, qualitative methods were used to collect data through interviews with several families, namely fathers, mothers and children. The following research focuses research on understanding the dangers of smoking, sources of information on the dangers of smoking, open, supportive and democratic family communication patterns, and open, supportive and democratic communication strategies. The findings in this study indicate that family communication patterns that are supportive and open play a greater role in preventing teenage children from smoking while family communication patterns that produce a democratic atmosphere for children so that they can feel more connected, not distant from their parents, feel supported, feel play a greater role in the family, help to develop a positive self-identity. It is hoped that the results of this research can contribute to improving strong relationships between parents and children through communication.
