Abstract

China's ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) project involves Kenya as one of the target countries receiving loan-based infrastructure development under the project's agenda. The infrastructure being built is a Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) type railway that is expected to replace the previous type of railway, the Meter Gauge Railway (MGR). Through this development, Kenya was assumed to be the beneficiary country, but contrary to some previous literature, they highlighted Kenya as the loser. Because of this, the researcher would like to examine Kenya's interests in co-operating with China through the SGR, particularly economic interests. This is because Kenya is reported to have difficulties in paying off interest on loans due to the construction of the Nairobi-Mombasa SGR. The method used by the researcher is descriptive research using a qualitative approach. The researcher collected secondary data from various references such as electronic books (e-books), theses, theses, journals, articles, online news, which are accurate and relevant. In conducting the analysis, the researcher used Nuechterlein's national interest theory as an analytical framework. The results of this study show that as mentioned by Nuechterlein, Kenya's economic interests in the SGR project are threefold, namely improving the country's economy, building mutually beneficial trade relations, and improving people's lives. Although in the economic aspect, Kenya saw many positive changes such as an increase in GDP and employment, after the construction of SGR phase I was completed, Kenya again experienced a decline in these aspects. Meanwhile, the standard of living of the people related to transport access has improved due to the operation of the SGR connecting Nairobi-Mombasa. These interests arise in the context of efforts to overcome existing problems in Kenya, namely problems related to the economy, trade, and people's living standards.
