Abstract
This research was motivated by researchers' interest in the phenomenon of social media use among teenagers. Along with the rapid advances in technology in the field of social media communications, parents face new challenges in monitoring their children's online activities. Social media has an impact that can be considered hopeful but also brings great danger to teenagers. This research was conducted in Blitar City because this city is one of the cities in East Java with the highest number of internet users, especially for social media use.
This research uses the communication process theory by Harold D. Lasswell and interpersonal communication which includes several stages, namely sending messages by the communicator to the communicant using certain media for the purpose of getting effects in the form of changes in behavior, actions and attitudes.
This research uses a qualitative approach based on case studies, which allows researchers to obtain in-depth and detailed information.
The research results show that the success of monitoring social media use by parents is greatly influenced by the quality of the interpersonal communication process. Mothers are the main communicators in conveying the rules for using social media to their children. When sending messages, parents set limits on their children's time playing social media. Next, the communicant accepts these rules in a change of attitude which initially the child finds difficult to accept, but because of the greater understanding about social media that the parents give their child, the child complies with these boundary rules. Rules in the form of time limits for playing social media have proven to be more appropriate in shaping children's positive behavior when using social media.
