Abstract
SLB Negeri 1 West Lombok is one of the “A” accredited special schools in West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara which provides educational services for children with disabilities from elementary to high school. The various limitations experienced by students with disabilities, especially in communication, certainly make it difficult for students to interact during the learning process, such as students at SLB Negeri 1 West Lombok. These limitations will of course affect the achievement of communication goals in supporting effective learning. The obstacles experienced by students with disabilities in the process of social interaction and communication are a serious challenge for teachers during the learning process. Therefore, teachers need to apply the principles of effective communication so that the learning process at school can run effectively and according to expectations.
Therefore, researchers are interested in applying teachers' knowledge of effective communication to students in understanding learning at SMA SLB Negeri 1 West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. This research uses a constructivist paradigm with a qualitative approach. The subjects of this research were 6 high school teachers at SLB Negeri 1 West Lombok. Data collection methods in this research used observation, interviews and documentation. The data analysis technique uses the Miles and Huberman qualitative analysis technique which includes data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions.
The results of the study showed that the application of effective communication principles in learning plays an important role in the success of the learning process at SLB Negeri 1 Lombok Barat. Teachers adjust verbal and nonverbal communication to the special needs of each student. Effective communication principles such as respect, empathy, clarity, humility and the ability to be heard are applied consistently. In addition, a variety of learning methods are used to increase student engagement and understanding. The overall approach applied at SLB Negeri 1 Lombok Barat shows that attention to the special needs of students and the application of appropriate communication principles are very important in supporting a successful learning process.
