Abstract

Royalties represent a fundamental aspect of musicians' livelihoods, providing compensation for their creative work while ensuring the protection of their intellectual property. For independent musicians in the city of Kediri, royalty payments offer a stable income, enabling them to invest in their skills, produce high-quality music, and reach a broader audience. One of the main challenges is the prevalence of piracy and unauthorized distribution, which can significantly erode artists' potential income. The lack of standard processes, transparency issues, and unclear information about royalty collection organizations hinder independent musicians from receiving fair compensation. There is a need for greater education and awareness among independent musicians about their royalty rights, the importance of copyright registration, and how to navigate law the royalty collection process. This research utilized empirical research methods, conducted in the city of Kediri, with primary data sources from interviews and secondary data from library research. The data were qualitatively analyzed by the researcher. The research findings indicate that independent musicians in Kediri have a limited understanding of royalty management, and it is far from optimal, with the legal foundation for regulations not yet effective, low awareness and compliance among the public to pay royalties, and a societal mindset that views music primarily for listening, hampering the proper functioning of royalty management for independent musicians in Kediri.
